Australian Skilled Independent (subclass 189)
Australian Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) is for people who are not sponsored by an employer or a family member or not nominated by a state or territory government, this program allows you to live, study and work in Australia as a permanent resident.
Basic things to check for eligibility:
- Age under 45 years
- Have relevant experience under occupation listed in Australia’s Skilled Occupations List
- Have Competent English Language ability
- Min cut of 65 points attained based on Age, Education, Experience, Language ability, nomination/sponsorship, Australian Study and Work, Partner skills and other criteria
- Apply Expression of Interest (EOI)

Partner Skills:
The Australian government can consider your spouse’s/partner’s skills for rewarding you an additional 5 points if your partner:
- Is under 45 years of age,
- Has competent English language skills,
- Is assessed and found to have skills related to their nominated occupation under SOL,
- Is accompanying you to the country and
- Is not a permanent residence holder or citizen of Australia.
