Schengen Visa

Types of Schengen Visas

Type A Visa: Airport Transit Visa

The Type A visa allows citizens of non-Schengen states to transit through or wait for their connecting flight in the international zone of an airport located in a Schengen country. It is ideal for travelers with layovers in Schengen airports.

Type B Visa

Although the Type B visa, which related to journeys lasting fewer than five days, has been replaced by the Type C visa with the condition “transit,” it was previously used for short transits through the Schengen area.

Type C Visa: Short-Stay Visa

The short-stay Schengen visa is the most common one. Issued by the visa services (embassies, consulates, or appointed external providers) of a Schengen country, it allows the holder to stay or travel freely in the Schengen area for less than 90 days over a 180-day period. This visa is ideal for tourists and business travelers.

Type D Visa: National Long-Stay Visa

The national visa, or Type D long-stay visa, is mandatory for any foreigner wishing to study, work, or live in a Schengen country for longer than 90 days (up to one year). It allows its holder to travel and stay in the Schengen area outside the originally chosen Schengen country for periods of up to 90 days over 180 days during the entire validity period of their visa. The travel purposes justifying a Type D visa include:
